At the start of the Battle of Britain 25 Squadron operated the Bristol Blenheim Mk1F and then re equipped with the Bristol Beaufighter Mk 1F in September 1940. Both aircraft types were operated in the night fighter role. 25 Squadron's participation in the battle cannot be compared with the exploits of the day fighter squadrons with their Spitfires and Hurricanes. Night fighter techniques and airborne radar were very much in their infancy in 1940.

25 Squadron was in 11 Group’s 'Order of Battle' from 10th July 1940, the start of the Battle of Britain, to the end of the battle on 3rd November 1940*. At the end of the battle 25 Squadron proceeded all other squadrons in 11 Group's Order of Battle, this was due to 25 Squadron remaining in 11 Group for the duration of the battle. Many other squadrons joined and left 11 Group but 25 squadron remained in 11 Group for the duration of the battle.

*31st October 1940 is considered to be the official date for the end of the Battle of Britain.
