25 Squadron - A ‘Battle of Britain’ Class Steam Locomotive

25 (F) Squadron is unique in today’s RAF as it is the only surviving squadron that was in 11 Group’s ‘Order of Battle’ for the duration of the Battle of Britain. 25 is a famous squadron with a long and distinguished history recognised post World War II when a steam locomotive of the Southern Railway was named ‘25 Squadron’.

How and why did 25 Squadron receive the honour of having a steam locomotive named after it when many other well known squadrons in the Battle of Britain did not? Recently I carried out some research to find the answers and discovered the link between 25 Squadron, 11 Group, the Battle of Britain and the history of a steam locomotive that came to be named in honour of 25 Squadron.
